The rest of the day was a blur to Anne. She lay still whilst Edwina and Muna bound her wound and then she agreed listlessly to stay in bed to rest, but she did not sleep. She stared up at the canopy of her tester bed, thinking about what she had done and the guilt she bore. Muna and Edwina stayed with her, talking softly to one another and occasionally coming to check that she was not developing a fever.

Simon’s troops were searching the house in case Malvoisier had concealed himself within, but word came later that he was nowhere to be found. As she lay in her room, Anne heard Simon’s troops ride out in a furious clatter of hooves to comb the surrounding area for the fugitive. They returned as darkness fell, empty-handed. It seemed that Malvoisier had vanished once again. Word of the outrage had gone about the villages and the whole area seethed with unease.

‘They are saying that Malvoisier is the devil’s general, never mind the King’s general, madam,’ Edwina reported, as she brought Anne some soup for her tea, ‘and that Lord Greville cannot fight the forces of evil.’

‘Nonsense!’ Anne said angrily, but she felt sick in her heart. ‘Malvoisier is no ally of the devil, nor is he the King’s man any more. He is no more than an outlaw.’
